Kenpo Karate
Apostolic Ministries started an American Kenpo Karate
program
in September of 2010. Students of various ages and backgrounds
come from all over to study this art under Instructor - Pastor Wayne
Hammonds. Pastor Hammonds and his assistants have diverse backgrounds
in martial arts.
Prior to studying Kenpo under Wayne Hammonds, I studied
Wing Chun Kung
Fu for many years. I had progressed to the rank of brown belt (sash) and
was about to promote to the rank of black belt when I moved to
Pennsylvania from Baltimore in
2004. I had looked all around trying to find a Wing Chun school in the
area for many
years. Then one day, Pastor Hammonds suggested that I study Kenpo under
him. Initially
I was skeptical because I was not interested in learning a new art. I was
set in my
ways and I felt I would be losing something if I switched over to this
"New Art".
However, because I trusted Pastor Hammonds I agreed to try Kenpo.
Through my study of the arts, I have found that all
karate originates from Kung Fu
or Chinese boxing as it is sometimes called. Karate originally meant "
China Hand".
Because of this, I've found that there are many similarities between Wing
Chun and
Kenpo. For instance, both arts offer a neutral stance as a base, in
addition to both
circular and linear strikes. Furthermore, there are elements of Judo and
Jujitsu
within Kenpo as well. As time went on I began to realize that my fear of
losing
something by changing arts could not have been further from the truth. By
practicing
Kenpo I have actually improved on my Kung Fu. At the same time, I am a
better
Kenpoist then I would have been without having studied Wing Chun.
Over time each martial artist will adapt any art to his
own body type and his own fighting style. However, because Kenpo has
elements of Chinese Boxing, Jujitsu and Judo,
it has the potential to improve ant fighting style. A grappler will learn
vicious strikes
that will make him more complete. A boxer will learn to strike with his
elbows,
knees, fingers, head and feet, not just his fists. A traditional Japanese Karateka
will benefit from the varied motion of Chinese karate. Chances are that
studying
Kenpo will improve your game, no matter what you know or don't know about
self defense.I promise you; you will find out, as I did that you will
gain knowledge
and self improvement and you will lose nothing.
